Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is pathology, and why is it important in healthcare?

Pathology is the branch of medicine that involves the study of diseases and their causes, processes and effects on the body. It plays a crucial role in healthcare by providing accurate diagnoses through the analysis of blood, tissue and other bodily samples. Pathologists work behind the scenes to identify diseases, monitor the progress of treatments and detect potential health issues early on. This information is vital for doctors to make informed decisions about a patient’s care, ensuring that treatments are effective and tailored to individual needs.

  • What types of tests are commonly performed in pathology?

Pathology covers a wide range of tests that help diagnose and monitor various health conditions. Common tests include blood tests which can check for conditions like anaemia, diabetes and infections; tissue biopsies which are used to diagnose cancers and other abnormalities; and urine tests which can detect kidney disease and other metabolic issues. Pathology also includes tests for genetic conditions, hormone levels and immune system function. These tests provide detailed information that is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

  • How do pathology results contribute to patient care?

Pathology results are a critical component of patient care as they provide detailed insights into a patient’s health. These results help doctors confirm diagnoses, determine the severity of a condition and monitor how well a treatment is working. For example, blood tests can reveal how the body is responding to medication while tissue biopsies can help assess whether a cancer has spread. By providing precise and reliable information, pathology results enable healthcare providers to make evidence-based decisions, leading to more effective and personalised treatment plans for patients.
